Project Manager - Estimator
Position Snapshot
Provides cost estimates of projects consisting of varying scope of material volume, complexity, and engineering/project management resources under the direction of the Estimating Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
An individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.
- Evaluates bid specifications and drawings as inputs.
- Creates accurate estimates thorough take-offs from plans.
- Communicates effectively with clients to ensure proper scope is quoted.
- Obtains competitive quotes for subcontracted work from subcontractors.
- Develops and issues competitive proposals to customers.
- Ensures that the organization is fully aware of the necessary tools or information required to successfully bid and acquire a project.
- Participates in project reviews.
- Shows creativity and resourcefulness to gain the best profit and pricing balance.
- Contributes to a database/library of pricing inputs and outputs to refine and streamline the estimating process. Examples include the following at a minimum:
- Regional rebar costs for supply and placement
- Reinforcing accessories
- Detailing/engineering
- Position requires a person with good interpersonal skills and the ability to be a team player
- Participation in the process by which customer expectations are managed and satisfied
- Technical comprehension of customer-provided information to the degree necessary for preparation of competitive ESM drawings, and the tactful and effective communication skills necessary to foster this comprehension and maintain customer trust.
- Provision of detail on ESM documents and drawings that is thorough, accurate, and complete in proportion to the level of customer-information provided for our use, and consistent in its presentation for Insteel sales interpretation.
- Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Education and Experience
- Professional, technical, or administrative training (Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management) preferred.
- Knowledge of construction markets, computer skills, and able to work in a team environment.
- Knowledge of the engineered structural mesh and/or prestressed concrete industries is preferred.
- Minimum of one year experience in similar industry; estimating experience in similar industry preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and work-related experience may be acceptable.

The position requires the ability to talk, see, and hear (with or without correction) on a frequent basis. Physical activities may occasionally include bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; reaching overhead; stretching; standing, sitting, and walking; and rotating the body from both seated and standing positions. The role also involves using hands to feel, touch, grasp, and grip tools, objects, or handles, performing repetitive movements, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 75 pounds with mechanical assistance as needed.
Work Environment

The role involves somewhat undesirable working conditions and requires frequent travel (approximately 70–80%). While performing job duties, the employee may occasionally (up to 30%) be exposed to a variety of environmental and workplace hazards, including heat and cold (both weather- and non-weather-related), wet or humid conditions, slippery surfaces, loud noise, outdoor weather, dust and dirt. The position may also involve working around moving or potentially dangerous machinery, electrical shock hazards, elevated work areas, toxic or caustic chemicals, vapors, odors, fumes, gases, and, in rare instances, explosive or incendiary hazards.
Equipment Used
The position requires frequent use (30–70% of the time) of a motor vehicle for transportation, as well as regular use of a computer and routine office equipment such as telephones, fax machines, copiers, and printers. Occasionally (up to 30% of the time), the role involves the use of hand tools, a calculator, and measuring devices such as micrometers and tape measures.
