Senior Industrial Engineer and Business Analyst

Position Snapshot
Identifies, develops, justifies, implements, and follows-up on projects to reduce operating costs by improving work methods, manufacturing processes, and pay systems for all facilities in the Concrete Reinforcing Products Business Unit. Responsible for all Industrial Engineering activities with supervisory responsibility over the Industrial Engineer I position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
An individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.
 
  • Identifies, develops, justifies, implements, and follows-up on projects designed to improve safety, quality, productivity, and reduce the overall operating cost for all facilities. 
  • Gathers and analyzes manufacturing data to evaluate and improve current manufacturing processes. Interprets, develops, plans, assigns, checks and directs work methods.  Addresses work method complaints and resolves problems.  This includes ensuring all standard work procedures, documents and visuals are up to date at each facility.
  • Investigates, provides justification, and determines transfer pricing for Insteel Engineered Products cast in place orders consistent with Company philosophy that internal transfers should be made at market prices.
  • Maintains costing data used by sales group and Master Scheduler on a quarterly basis.
  • Analyzes monthly cost and manufacturing variances by plant, including MUV, PPV, revaluation, inventory, conversion cost absorption, and freight.  Assists plant personnel in understanding variances and determining and implementing corrective actions where appropriate.
  • Performs special projects/analysis as required with emphasis on process improvement.
  • Provides operational and financial analysis serving in a decision-support role for plant and business unit management.
  • Serves as a liaison between business unit management and plant managers in facilitating and monitoring the execution of continuous improvement programs, auditing, tracking, and reporting actual versus targeted results.
  • Assists with planning and oversight of expansions, equipment replacements/additions and operational reconfigurations
  • Establishes standards for machine performance and quality.
  • Provides ideas to Engineering Group involving mechanical machine improvements.
  • Assists General Managers in writing Capital Appropriations for projects/equipment.
    • Assists in the management of capital improvement projects, focusing on accuracy and delivery of projected payback. Performs post-completion reviews of plant capital projects analyzing actual versus forecasted performance.
  • Investigates, tests, and implements new technology into plant operations.
  • Uses Activity Based Costing (ABC), financial, and P & L data to target improvement opportunities.
    • Finds ways to lower setup and process related costs of operation methods.
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises Industrial Engineer employee(s). Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, checking, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; costs; operation methods; establishing standards of performance; maintaining quality standards; maintaining quantity standards; and carrying out established policy.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related technical field required.
  • Broad knowledge of industrial or process engineering principles and practices.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Industrial or Process Engineering or a related business environment preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the stated educational requirements.

Employees must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 pounds.

This role requires strong visual abilities, including constant observation, near and distance vision, depth perception, color discrimination, peripheral vision, the ability to work in both dim and bright lighting conditions, and the ability to frequently adjust focus between objects at varying distances.
The position also requires the operation of mechanical controls, including buttons, knobs, levers, cranks, and pedals, as necessary to perform job duties safely and effectively.

Employees will frequently be exposed to heat (both weather-related and process-related), cold temperatures, vibration, loud noise, dust, dirt, oil, grease, solvents, and periodic travel. Occasional exposure may include wet or humid conditions, slippery surfaces, outdoor weather, moving or hazardous machinery, electrical hazards, elevated work areas, toxic or caustic chemicals, vapors, odors, fumes, gases, and potential explosive or incendiary hazards.

The consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Employees must continuously wear hearing protection, safety glasses or goggles, and safety shoes while performing job duties. Depending on the task or work area, additional PPE may occasionally be required, including aprons, masks, respirators, harnesses, hard hats, gloves, and Level B, C, or D personal protective equipment.
